Wheelchairs & Scooters on JetBlue

JetBlue is committed to making air travel accessible and inclusive for all passengers, including those who use mobility aids. The airline accommodates a wide variety of personal wheelchairs and mobility devices to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free journey.

This includes:

  • Folding, collapsible, or non-folding manual wheelchairs : These can be checked at the ticket counter, gate-checked, or in some cases stored in the aircraft cabin, depending on availability and space.

  • Battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters : These are accepted as checked items and must comply with JetBlue's safety regulations, particularly regarding battery types and watt-hour limits.

For passengers traveling with recreational scooters or mobility devices that fall outside of standard medical equipment, JetBlue recommends reviewing its specific policies listed under the sports gear and battery information section. These guidelines help ensure that your equipment is transported safely and in accordance with FAA regulations.

Whether you're using a compact travel scooter or a full-size powered wheelchair, JetBlue encourages all passengers to add a Special Service Request (SSR) during booking or through the “Manage Trips” section to make necessary accommodations in advance. Doing so helps the airline provide you with the best possible service, from check-in to arrival.

As always, it’s a good idea to contact JetBlue customer support if you have questions about your specific device or battery type to avoid any travel disruptions.

Battery-Powered Wheelchairs & Scooters

Battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids are accepted as checked items only.

Important battery information:

  • Wheelchair batteries are not allowed in the cabin, except for lithium-ion batteries.

  • Lithium-ion batteries must be properly protected (terminals covered) and cannot exceed 300 watt hours or 25 grams of lithium.

  • Passengers are permitted to carry up to two spare lithium-ion batteries, as long as the total does not exceed 300 watt hours or 25 grams.

  • If a wheelchair or mobility device has a lithium-ion battery without protective housing, the battery must be removed and safely carried onto the aircraft with the terminals protected.

  • Non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries are not accepted.

  • Both spillable and non-spillable batteries are acceptable in mobility devices.

  • All batteries must be clearly labeled with "nonspillable" or "spillable" so our team can handle them properly.

  • A battery may be rejected if it appears damaged or doesn’t meet safety standards.

  • Detachable items like seat covers should be carried in the cabin and do not count toward your carry-on limit.

Manual Folding Wheelchairs

JetBlue allows one manual, collapsible wheelchair to be stored in the cabin on every flight upon request. A second manual, collapsible wheelchair may be accommodated in the cabin with some restrictions. Alternatively, we can check your manual wheelchair at the ticket counter or gate if preferred.

No advance notice is required to store a wheelchair in the cabin—this is handled on a first-come, first-served basis at the airport. If we are unable to accommodate your wheelchair in the cabin, we can gate-check it, and it will be available for you at the plane door upon arrival.

To have your wheelchair stowed in the cabin, you must pre-board. To request this service, please contact an airport crewmember upon arrival. We also recommend adding a Special Service Request to your booking.

Detachable items, like seat cushions and footrests, should be brought into the cabin with you, and these do not count toward your carry-on allowance.

If you're traveling with your own wheelchair, whether manual or motorized, please let us know the best way to handle, operate, and stow your device. You can download and complete our Wheelchair Information Form for this purpose.

The dimensions of the cargo bin doors for each aircraft type are as follows:

  • A321: 73" x 80"

  • A320: 73" x 80"

  • E190: 28"

  • A321 LR: 73" x 80"

  • A220: 33" x 46.75"

If your assistive device does not fit within the cargo bin door dimensions for your specific flight, you may qualify for a refund difference between the original and alternate flights. For eligibility, the following criteria must be met:

  • Both flights must be operated by JetBlue.

  • The flights must have the same origin and destination.

  • They must either be direct or have identical connections.

For review, please reach out to us with a CRO request and provide the following details:

  • The dimensions of your wheelchair, demonstrating that the desired flight couldn’t accommodate it.

  • Screenshots or details showing the cost of the flight that was not available for your wheelchair, including dates and base fare.

  • Confirmation code and/or itinerary of the flight you were able to take.

Other Assistive Devices

Assistive devices that can fit safely in an overhead compartment or under your seat may be carried into the cabin and do not count toward your carry-on baggage allowance.

Can you take a mobility scooter on JetBlue flight?

They accommodate most personal wheelchairs, including folding, collapsible, and non-folding manual models, as well as battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Do airlines charge extra for mobility scooters?

Battery-powered mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and scooters, can be checked free of charge at the gate or ticket counter. All assistive devices must be stored in accordance with FAA safety guidelines. Please note that battery-operated wheelchairs and scooters are not permitted in the cabin due to safety regulations.

How to check a mobility scooter on an airline?

Aircraft with 100 or more seats are equipped with onboard closets that can accommodate one collapsible wheelchair. Mobility devices may also be stored in overhead bins or beneath your seat when space allows. Non-collapsible wheelchairs, scooters, and other battery-powered mobility devices must be checked at the ticket counter.

Does a scooter count as a carry on?

Can the Scooter Fit in Your Carry-On or Checked Luggage? If your mobility scooter is compact, lightweight, foldable, or can be disassembled, it may meet airline baggage size and weight limits—allowing it to be packed in your carry-on or checked luggage. Always verify with your airline for specific requirements.

Aircraft Accessibility

Not all JetBlue cities offer jetbridge or level entry access. If you're traveling with a mobility device, please inform us so we can arrange the necessary assistance for boarding or deplaning.

Want to know which airports have level-entry boarding?

You can search for your airport here.

We offer aisle chairs, transfer kits, and personnel to assist with boarding and deplaning, and you may also bring your own transfer kit. If you need help ascending or descending stairs, please notify us when you arrive at the airport.

Please note, the lavatories on our aircraft are not accessible, though they are equipped with grab bars and accessible handles.
