Power Wheelchair Frequently Asked Questions

Power Wheelchair Frequently Asked Questions

How much do power wheelchairs cost?

Power wheelchair prices vary greatly depending on brand and features. Travel power wheelchairs like the Golden Technologies LiteRider Envy LT start at just $1,299 where heavier duty power wheelchairs like the Golden Technologies Compass HD go north of $5,000. The wide range of pricing comes down to specifications and upgrades. Mid-wheel drive systems are usually expensive than front and rear-wheel drive power wheelchairs.

Will Medicare cover my power wheelchair?

Your primary care doctor will have to perform a mobility evaluation and write a prescription for Medicare to cover all or some of the cost. The power wheelchair must be a medical necessity for your daily living activities at home. Your primary care doctor will check if these at home tasks are possible with a cane or walker, manual wheelchair, or even a mobility scooter. The user must then demonstrate they are able to use the power wheelchair safely and effectively.

What are the difference between a power wheelchair and a mobility scooter?

Mobility scooters and power wheelchairs can be used indoors and outdoors. However, power wheelchairs are designed more for indoor use and mobility scooters are designed more for outdoor use. Mobility scooters are controlled by tillers (steering columns) and almost all power wheelchairs are controlled by joysticks. Folks who rely on mobility scooters should be able to sit upright for longer periods of time compared to a power wheelchair. If the user cannot do this a power wheelchair is a better option since the seats usually offer better support.
