How to Use a Mobility Scooter: Learn the Basics

Before start driving your mobility scooter please read through the user manual to learn basic control functions. Here are four standard steps for operating most mobility scooters on the market today:
    1. Switch on: Switch the mobility scooter on by inserting the key into the ignition switch and proceed to turn it to the right. There will then be a visual cue to indicate that the mobility scooter is now on. Usually in the form of a green light.
    2. Move Forward or Backward: Gently pull the throttle back to move forward. The farther back you pull the throttle the faster the scooter will go.
    3. Braking System: Your mobility scooter brakes will engage when you release the throttle.
    4. Switch off: Be sure your mobility scooter is completely stopped before you turn the key to the left. Always take the key with you after you turn off your mobility scooter.

Proceed Slowly

Nearly all mobility scooters will include a dial to adjust the overall speed. We suggest keeping the dial at the low end when you are getting comfortable with how to use your new mobility scooter. This is even more important to do if you have never used a mobility scooter before. As you slowly get more comfortable using you mobility scooter then proceed to continue increasing your top speed.

Practice Makes Perfect

Like many other things using your new mobility scooter will take some time to become fully comfortable and confident with using it. We suggest starting by using your mobility scooter somewhere that is very open, such as a parking lot, to prevent running into things and possibly causing damage to your new mobility scooter. If you live somewhere with low traffic roads you may even want to take it around the block a few times to get a better with the general operation of the mobility scooter.

Charge your Battery

Like every electronic your mobility scooter must be charged regularly. You do not want to be stuck somewhere due to something as simple as a non-charged battery. Mobility scooters usually are charged overnight, roughly 6-7 hour, but please consult the owners manual for more in-depth information on your specific model. It is never a bad idea to bring your charger with you in case you are staying out most of the day.

To properly charge your mobility scooter follow these few simple steps. Start by removing the key, then plug the charger into a wall outlet, and proceed to plug the  charger into the port on your device. Most mobility scooters have a green light or some indicator that will display some sort of change once the unit is completely charged and ready for use.

Avoid Certain Surfaces

You may not be able to always avoid rough terrain with your mobility scooter, but you should always try to avoid unstable, rough, and slippery/wet surfaces if at all possible. This also includes sand, gravel, railroad crossings, and grassy areas that may have potholes. You will also need to get familiar with how to maneuver inclines and curbs. We suggest avoiding these areas during the learning curve period of getting comfortable in operating the mobility scooter.

Follow the Road Rules

Cruising on your mobility scooter doesn’t include any special privileges. During use you are subject following the same road rules as pedestrians. Be on the lookout for street signs and stay aware of your surroundings. Most mobility scooters are designed for smooth flat surfaces like sidewalks so you will need to share the path with others. Remember to slow down and communicate with others via polite gesture or your horn. Safety always comes first and soon enough you’ll be cruising town.

Technical Issues

It's possible your mobility scooter may breakdown or you may experience technical issues during your ownership of the mobility scooter. If you do run into technical issues do your best not to stress. Majority of technical problems are minor, but can be solved with minor troubleshooting. A quick thing to try is turning off the key and then wait 10 seconds before turning it back on. This simple reset has been known to fix minor issues. If that tip doesn't work remember to check the freewheel mode lever. If neither of this fix your issues double check the battery to be sure it is fully installed and properly attached. If none of these tips solve your issue then proceed to check your owner's manual or contact the technical support team at the manufacturer.
